You can send push notifications to update tiles and badges even when your app is inactive. Windows Azure Mobile Services makes this easy:

1. Open your project or this sample in Visual Studio
2. Right click on your project in Solution Explorer
3. Select "Add"
4. Click "Push notification..."
5. Follow the wizard
